10 things Tendulkar’s apologists love to say

BY BHARGAV.

It is no secret that Sachin Tendulkar is going through the worst form of his career. Yet there are those who'd love to defend him with arguments that are often asinine. Here's a collection of some of those:

(1) You can’t drop Tendulkar because he has no successor.

COUNTER-ARGUMENT: It’s been over 25 years since Sunil Gavaskar’s retirement and nineteen since Kapil Dev’s, and yet nobody has come close to replacing these great players, neither statistically nor spiritually. Australia didn’t have replacements for Don Bradman, Greg Chappell or Ricky Ponting. Pakistan have never had another Imran Khan, or New Zealand a Richard Hadlee, and England an Ian Botham. What they had were players who could get the job done. So it will be for Tendulkar too.

(2) How many matches have Tendulkar’s critics played?

If the number of games played is the sole criterion for judging a man’s cricketing acumen, there’s nobody alive today to critique Tendulkar’s performances. So should he be his own coach, his own selector, his own manager and his own media? Certainly not. Meanwhile, the person Tendulkar turns to for advice is his brother Ajit. So how many Tests did Ajit play?

(3) He is the world’s best batsman.

He was — notice the past tense emphasis — the world’s best batsman. Now, he is not even India’s best. Hell, he is not even the best in the Mumbai Indians team. If you’re looking for the best, look at AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, Hashim Amla, Michael Clarke, Alastair Cook and Kumar Sangakkara. Tendulkar’s form has deserted him. His reflexes are visibly slower, his eyesight perhaps a little less sharp, and his body has suffered much punishment over three decades. There’s no shame in having those problems at age 40, but there is in building him up for his past achievements.

(4) Nobody can match his records, so he should play on.

Runs scored yesterday won’t win you a match today. It’s been 65 years since Don Bradman stopped playing cricket, and nobody has come close to some of his records. Does that mean he should have continued playing on? Since the 2011 World Cup, Tendulkar averages 31 for India in all formats with one hundred in 47 knocks — a massive fall from his lofty standards. These mediocre results of the last two years are threatening to diminish all that good work he had done in the past.

(5) Tendulkar can decide when to play.

Wrong. It is the selectors who decide when a cricketer plays and when he doesn’t. For long, Tendulkar has been acting as his own selector, picking and choosing when he will play and when he won’t. Players tend to have a biased view of their own utility and fitness. The best example of that is Ricky Ponting who continued playing for Australia till he had to be forced out of the team due to poor form.

(6) People want to see Tendulkar play, so he should continue playing.

Is the individual greater than the team? And is the individual’s performances more important than the team’s results?

(7) It’s just a matter of time before he makes a lot of runs and prove his critics wrong.

Of all the things Tendulkar’s die-hard fans say, this is probably the silliest. Tendulkar has proven many people wrong with the strength of his performances. After 24 years of service to Indian cricket, doesn’t he deserve to not have the burden of proving his critics wrong all over again?

(8) His presence boosts team’s morale.

At the moment, the only team’s morale he has been boosting is the opposition. Tendulkar has returned mediocre performances in every tournament he has played since the World Cup. Any opposition would love to play against an under-pressure player struggling to rectify his problems.

(9) He is the god of cricket. You have no right to criticise him.

Actually, that is incorrect. Look up Article 19 (1)(a) of the Indian constitution.

(10) We don’t have a tenth item, but feel free to take your pick from some of the comments below.

NOT ONLY FACEBOOK GRAPH:GOOGLE RELEASED DETECTING FACES GRAPH

Google Harnesses Knowledge Graph, Facial Recognition to Give movie a special insight

Google-knowledge-graph-jack-black
The Google Play Movies and TV app is debuting a new feature that gives greater insight into your favorite actors, films and shows — thanks to the search giant's Knowledge Graph.
If you've ever found yourself mulling over the name of an unidentified actor or song while watching a film, the app's new "info cards" will provide facts related to any movie being watched on an Android tablet. To access them, users simply press pause, and the cards will pop up with information on the actors, soundtrack, among other details. The cards will disappear when the movie continues.
"You can tap on an actor's face to learn more about him, like his age, place of birth, his character in the movie, and his recent work, or scroll through the info cards to learn more about the movie or soundtrack," Ben Serridge, Google Play's product manager, announced in a blog post Wednesday.
This information is similar to what appears in Google Search — that is, via Knowledge Graph, the technology that makes Google's search-engine results more intuitive.
Info cards will be available for hundreds of movies in Google Play, and more will be added "every day," Serridge said.
American users who have tablets that runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and higher, can download the newest version of the Movies and TV app from the Google Play store. Unfortunately, those who live outside the U.S. and don't own an Android tablet will have to wait, as Google said it hopes to bring info cards to more countries and devices "soon."

Tendulkar different from everybody: Srinivasan

BY BHARGAV.

This is what BCCI President N.Srinivasan had to say to NDTV on topics ranging from Sachin Tendulkar's retirement to his controversial backing of the Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

On India's 4-0 series win over Australia

It is very nice to see India winning. We always had the confidence in the team. We understood that the team was going through a period of transition after some great stalwarts of Indian cricket chose to retire. But I think our faith in the team, the captain and the players have been justified.

On rumours regarding Sachin Tendulkar's retirement

Sachin is different from every other cricketer. This is a personal opinion. I distinguish between selectors and my view. In that context, I say that Tendulkar is different from everybody. I don't think anyone of us can talk on Sachin. Not proper for us to analyse his every performance.

On whether he had stopped the selectors from sacking Dhoni

It is not proper to discuss selection matters. The constitution of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does say that the president has to approve the national team.

On Dhoni the skipper

During this season, his innings against England and the double hundred against Australia were game changers. He has always been an outstanding player. He gave us two World Cups. He is very experienced captain. Everybody will agree that given the glorious uncertainties of cricket Dhoni has sailed well.

On the decision to drop Sehwag and Gambhir

I don't want to comment on the selection but any decision taken by the selection committee has always been taken keeping in mind the future of the team. All I can say is that the team looks good.

On Dhawan and Pujara

What we should be happy about is the performances of Shikhar Dhawan, Pujara and (Murali) Vijay. The team is looking different, looking confident.

On the possibility of IPL matches being disrupted in Chennai

These are operational matters. I don't want to get into this issue. The IMG (event manager) and the IPL will look at it and decide. The government of Tamil Nadu is capable of handling law and order situation. I feel these issues will get sorted out. I am not aware of teams making a request to move matches out of Chennai.

NO MORE FARMVILLE ON FACEBOOK...

BY BHARGAV.

Zynga Continues to Cut Ties With Facebook
Zynga, the social gaming company whose runaway hit FarmVille made it synonymous with Facebook games, is now pulling away from the social network that nurtured it. Starting next week, players will no longer be required to sign up for a Facebook account in order to register on Zynga.com. And Zynga games -- many of which encourage in-game purchases -- will use the gaming company's own currency instead of using Facebook as a payment processor. Facebook takes a 30 percent fee on those transactions. In 2011, Zynga accounted for about 12 percent of Facebook's revenue.
The disengagement is mutual. Facebook plans to withhold certain information about its users' social graphs. For instance, Zynga users will no longer be able to see their Facebook friends who are playing Zynga games but with whom they haven't previously interacted. Although Zynga would prefer to have full access to Facebook user data, moving away from the company's former dependence on a single platform seems the right choice. -- Wall Street Journal
YouTube reaches a billion monthly users.
YouTube says it now has 1 billion monthly users. If YouTube were a country, it would be the third-largest in the world, after China and India. The video service is so powerful and well-known around the world that it's an advertiser's dream: Every one of Advertising Age's top 100 brands has run a campaign on YouTube. -- CNET
Pinterest acquires a recommendation app.
Less than a year after local recommendation app Livestar launched, it has been purchased by Pinterest. Livestar will be shutting down and its engineering team will be joining Pinterest. "We think the Livestar team is a natural fit for Pinterest because of their commitment to inspiring people to do things in their everyday lives through social and expert recommendations," Pinterest said in a statement.
